Pickering High School Photographer Captures National Title
Durham Region, ON - It has been a whirlwind two weeks for Pickering High School’s Ethan Geng, who just captured his second consecutive gold medal for photography—first at the Provincial Skills Competition, and now on the national stage.
As the sole representative from the Durham District School Board (DDSB) to compete for Team Ontario at the Skills Canada National Competition, Ethan’s back-to-back victories have solidified his place among the top young creators in the country.
"Competing at the national level has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my high school career," Ethan said. "Since picking up a camera in Grade 10, I’ve always loved taking photos. But having the opportunity to represent Ontario alongside so many talented student photographers from across Canada was truly amazing. It pushed me to grow immensely, and I’m incredibly grateful to earn gold doing something I love."
His mentor and photography teacher, Nelshah Reilly, isn’t surprised by his success. She noted that Ethan has spent countless hours outside the classroom refining his skills since last year.
"His passion, dedication, and attention to detail are what helped him achieve this level of recognition," Reilly said.
While Ethan’s future behind the lens is bright, his next chapter will take him in a different direction. The graduating Grade 12 student is headed to Queen’s University this fall to pursue a Bachelor of Health Sciences, with ultimate aspirations of becoming a physician.
